Why Should Your Child Start Learning French Now?

EARLY LANGUAGE LEARNING

Lots of studies show that learning a foreign language is best done as soon as possible. Educators believe that between the ages of three and six, children’s minds are, like sponges, extremely malleable and receptive. In addition, unlike adults, children don’t worry about what other people might think, even when they make mistakes. Whereas many older learners are afraid to express themselves in case they get their grammar wrong or use poor pronunciation.

BOOSTS BRAIN DEVELOPMENT

Studies have shown repeatedly that foreign language learning enhances overall cognitive skills like critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and flexibility of mind in young children. Other cognitive benefits (including memory, focus, and decision-making) help students who are learning a foreign language out-score their non-foreign language-learning peers in the verbal and math sections of standardized tests.

INCREASED CULTURAL APPRECIATION

Learning French at a young age will allow your child to explore another culture, to develop an open mind, and to broaden their horizons.

For a child and adults, being able to communicate in French exposes us to and fosters an appreciation for the traditions, religions, arts, and history of the people associated with the French language.

Greater understanding promotes greater tolerance, empathy, and acceptance of others—with studies showing that children who have studied another language display more cultural appreciation.

LEARN OTHER LANGUAGES

Those who study French, at an early age, have a distinct advantage when attempting to learn the 43 other languages that share Latin roots with French including Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

Learning French can even help you speak better English.

Learning French will nurture your child’s desire to learn other foreign languages.

Having studied French grammar and sentence structure will make studying other languages, with more difficult grammar and sentence structure, easier.

MORE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

By having your child study French, you will be helping them progress academically during some of the most critical years of their schooling experience. As your child pursues a higher education, their French-speaking capabilities will help them excel. French is one of the top ten majors most likely to lead to less unemployment and higher earnings.

French is also considered one of the most important languages in the international job market. Forbes magazine reports that French is the language of the future, according to a study by Natixis investment bank projecting French will be the “most-spoken language in the world” in the coming decades.
